Siam Tinplate Co., Ltd., a tin plate manufacturer, a Sumitomo Corporation-related company, received the Prime Minister Industry Award 2009 (Energy-Saving Section) of Thailand.

The Prime Minister Industry Award was established in 1993 by the Thai Government with the aim of promoting and developing the nation's industrial sector. Awardees are selected through a rigorous screening process, including document review and an on-site inspection of the plant by inspectors from the Ministry of Industry. Siam Tinplate has been awarded the Thailand Energy Award and National Occupational Safety & Health Award, but this is the first time the company has received the Prime Minister Industry Award.

The Energy Award was presented to the company for its widespread and steadfast efforts to reduce its use of energy, for example, by replacing its equipment and facilities with those designed to save energy, such as by replacing DC motors with AC inverter motors in the plating line. This edition of the Prime Minister Industry Award was given to the company in recognition of its highly efficient energy-saving plant with its efficient use of energy during production. It was also based on the company's achievements in controlling utilities such as water, electricity, and steam at the plant by using a monitoring system; the successful application of the PDCA cycle to meet their short- and medium-term energy saving targets; and well-planned undertakings by all employees to establish a system of Total Productive Management (TPM).

Siam Tinplate will focus its efforts on making further improvements in every possible aspect, including environmental management and quality, so as to continue playing a leading role as a model plant contributing to local communities.
