Sumitomo Corporation has long been developing businesses in Vietnam and is currently running more than 30 projects throughout the country. These projects span a wide range of areas, such as operation of steel processing centers, development and management of industrial parks, automobile and truck dealership businesses, logistics business, power generation and more. In particular, Thang Long Industrial Park (TLIP) in Hanoi and Thang Long Industrial Park II in Hung Yen province, both of which were developed by Sumitomo Corporation, have been providing support to many Japanese companies entering Vietnam. Besides, Sumitomo Corporation is also focusing on power plant construction projects and power plant operation. Our involvement in such areas is reaching about 10% of total power producing capacity in Vietnam. Thus, our presence in the country is increasing.
At the same time, Sumitomo Corporation has been making social contributions. Since the foundation of the Sumitomo Corporation Scholarship in 1996, we have granted scholarships to more than 1,300 college students. We also established a series of lectures on managing a global corporation at the Hanoi National Economics University in 2008. In 2006, Sumitomo Corporation opened a Japanese language class in the city of Danang to promote cultural exchanges between Japan and Vietnam, with former employee of the company serving as instructor. Through these and other activities, Sumitomo Corporation has been making contributions mainly in the area of human resources development.
Based on these good relations, when Mr. Nong Duc Manh, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam and Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung visited Japan, they both had an individual meeting with the President of Sumitomo Corporation, Susumu Kato. General Secretary Manh expressed his appreciation for a series of activities sponsored by Sumitomo Corporation that have made significant contributions to the economic development of Vietnam.
