Sumitomo Corporation invited Masahiko Adachi, Sumitomo Shoji Research Institute's Senior Analyst for North America, to present a lecture to media representatives on October 21, 2008 titled "Perspective on the U.S presidential and congressional elections, and challenges for the incoming administration." Adachi had previously spent one week talking with the policy advisors and campaign staff of both Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and Republican nominee John McCain. Based on his own analyses of information gleaned through such talks and from various other sources, Adachi presented his views of the current situation regarding the presidential and congressional campaigns.

 

Drawing also on a wealth of personal knowledge and experience, Adachi addressed a range of pressing and topical issues, including the influence of the rapidly deteriorating U.S. economy on the respective campaigns, the key figures in both the Democratic and Republican camps and the fate of the current White House staff and Cabinet officials if Obama were to win the election. The audience responded with a number of questions on such topics as future economic policies and how different outcomes may affect U.S. trade relations with Japan.

 

This was the second in a series of lectures organized by Sumitomo Corporation and was well-received by the audience, eliciting favorable comments such as, "The speaker's point of view was particularly informative," and "the lecturer clearly indicated the key players and their personal connections within each of the campaigns."
