- How did you come to join Sumitomo Corporation (Guangzhou) Ltd.?
- I majored in Japanese at college because I was interested in Japanese culture. As I wanted to work for a Japanese company, I visited several Japanese companies for job interviews. Among these companies, I liked Sumitomo Corporation because I found its workplace atmosphere to be the best. Convinced there were many things I could learn at Sumitomo Corporation, I then decided to work for the company after being offered a position.
Guangzhou is a treasure house of food. All kinds of foods are available. Shown in the picture are rice gruel, rice noodle rolls known as “zheng pai gu,” (steamed (pork) spare ribs ) and beef tripe (cow stomach).
- What do you like about the workplace atmosphere of Sumitomo Corporation (Guangzhou)?
- Our office is housed in one of the tallest building in Guangzhou. The office is staffed with about 80 people. With many of them being young, they are an energetic bunch. Workers at the Guangzhou office formed a labor union in 2007. The union’s activity is wide ranging, such as year-end and New Year parties, badminton matches, soccer games and movie outings. Through these activities, the workers have naturally developed a sense of comradeship, even during daily conversations.

- What kind of city is Guangzhou?
- I cannot describe it in one word. But as is often said that “All delicious food is in Guangzhou,” you cannot be disappointed by any food you are served in Guangzhou. People in Guangzhou are receptive about absorbing things coming from the outside of the city as long as they find them valuable. So, Guangzhou changes every day and this is very exciting.
This is the view from the office. The building farthest in the picture is a new television tower in Guangzhou, which is now under construction. The tower will be taller than CITIC Plaza, an 88-story building that houses Sumitomo Corporation (Guangzhou).
