Answer
Could you describe your job?
Supporting the importation & exportation of motor vehicles, and components, servicing the South African market, and neighboring countries. We provide a full procurement & supply service and facilitate the whole process: from the ordering and financing of CBU (completely built units) vehicles, to the shipping, clearing and logistics of delivery. I see it as an important task for us to build good relationships between our buyers and sellers, and always look to expand our support and service functions further. This ever-changing business environment makes me even more passionate about my job.
What is your impression of Sumitomo Corporation?
Since joining the organization I was immediately aware of the unique and strong corporate culture. The office environment is quiet and conventional, which is definitely unlike my previous company. South Africans like to communicate, even during office hours. It’s very constructive within our department, as ideas and information flow freely between us, and all the staff involved are aware of changes or developments.
In addition I was fortunate enough to be offered the opportunity to visit our Headquarters in Tokyo in January 2010; and the whole experience amazed me more than anything else since I joined the company. It was very inspiring to witness the extent of Sumitomo’s credence and involvements in Japan. Our Head Office is truly magnificent, and truthfully, I probably had not comprehended the size of our organization and workforce.

At Johannesburg office we hold 2 year-end functions. One is for the family and another is only for employees. The picture is taken at the function for the family in 2009.

What was your impression of Japan?
I have only visited Japan once, on business, but I thoroughly enjoyed my experience. I always enjoy travelling to a country for the first time, and experiencing the lifestyle and customs there. I was fortunate enough to see a few early cherry blossoms and experienced snow and the subway for the first time. I also managed to do a bit of souvenir shopping for my family back home. I hope to visit Japan again soon, and perhaps one day to bring my family on holiday. I’d like to visit Kamakura to see Big Buddha, and explore Kyoto.

What are your future goals?
I would like to continue working, because I want to maintain my determination in an environment where I can keep on challenging myself and learning new things. South Africa has great potential for future growth and development, so I hope to contribute to local advancements.
