Terneyles Manages 2.6 Million Hectares of Pristine Virgin Forests

Attending the ceremony were a number of esteemed guests including members of congress, consuls, and business partners from Russia, China, South Korea, and Japan, evidence of the far-reaching business activities of Terneyles. Owning about 2.6 million hectares of forest area (about twelve times the size of Tokyo), Terneyles carries out FSC Certified sustainable forest management using the ribbon cutting logging method, which allows virgin forests to regenerate without human intervention.

From above, rows of cut trees resemble ribbons.

Production lines at the new processing factory are computer-controlled.

Following the factory tour, reporters took pictures of Terneyles’s private port and the town of Plastun. From a hilltop overlooking the vast port facilities, they seemed to be impressed by the massive amount of logs and lumber ready to be shipped out from the port as they continued taking pictures.

At the port, cranes load logs onto ships.

Upon returning to the hotel in Vladivostok, another party and a festive mood awaited reporters, featuring official speeches and traditional Russian dance. The tour schedule was quite tight, taking the party a day and a half to travel from Tokyo to Niigata to Vladivostok to Plastun, before heading back immediately after the tour. The tour was very significant, however, in that reporters could witness some of our sustainable forest management activities in the Far East. The ceremony was broadcast immediately the next day.

A traditional Japanese Kagami-Wari (sake bottle breaking) ceremony at the party.

Brief Explanation

OAO Terneyles

Based in Plastun, in Russia's Maritime Province, OAO Terneyles is an integrated forestry company with its own private shipping port. It is engaged in forestry management and exports raw lumber, laminated woods and wood processed into lumber, veneers, chips, etc. An independent company since privatization in 1992, it aims for customer satisfaction through sustainable forest management and law-abiding practices.

FSC Certification

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international third party organization that certifies economically and environmentally sustainable forest management, as well as lumber and lumber products, contributing to environmental conservation and its social benefits. Terneyles is the first company in the Russian Far East and Siberia with FSC Certification for its own forest area, one of the largest natural forest areas in the world with such certification.

Ribbon Cutting

Ribbon cutting is a logging method that cuts trees from virgin forests in rows at intervals of 20-30 meters. From above, the rows resemble ribbons and allow buds from fallen seeds to grow naturally among parent trees so that forests regenerate without the need for human tree planting efforts.
