For this issue, I visited Singapore; situated on a key commercial and maritime transport point, it has grown remarkably through trade and financial services. It is a multicultural country, in which Japanese culture is well-represented.

Singapore's compactness

Singapore's population of 4.7 million people, coupled with its city-like size, makes it second only to Monaco in population density. Nearly every spot in this compact and efficient city-state is reachable by way of Singapore's Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) subway system. Singapore's atmosphere varies: from the business district, crowded with skyscrapers; to the dozens of nearby shopping centers, packed with buyers and sellers; to ethnic quarters such as Little India and Chinatown, which are rich with preserved old Indian and Chinese neighborhoods.

I enjoyed dinner with staff from Sumitomo Corporation Asia.

Sumitomo Corporation's representative office, controlling its Southeast and Southwest Asian bases, is located in Singapore. Responding to the growth of commercial borderlessness throughout Asia, Sumitomo Corporation, in April 2008, established Sumitomo Corporation Asia Pte. Ltd. to improve the management efficiency over a wide area. More than 160 executives and employees, including dispatched and locally-hired staff, work in the Singapore office, which controls the overall business and management of 18 offices in the Asia Region.

Japanese TV programs broadcast on Singapore TV

Japanese culture, like many other distinct cultures, is well-represented in Singapore. Japanese cuisine, cars, and electronic devices can be found everywhere. A Japanese TV series called “Japan Hour” is broadcast on Singapore TV, helping to expand the familiarity of Japanese culture.

A long-running series with a 19-year history, Japan Hour first appeared on Singapore Broadcasting Corporation in December 1991. Sumitomo Corporation Asia, the key contributor in Japan Hour's program management, recruits sponsors, purchases programs and broadcast time, and creates subtitles.

Mr. Kohama, Group General Manager of the team in charge of Japan Hour, reminisced on the early days: “When the series first started, information related to Japan was limited, meaning that many Japanese living in Singapore relied on our programs for news, quiz shows, and other variety shows.”
