Upon joining the company in 2007, Onishi was assigned to the Corporate Communications Department. He is now in charge of Mass Media Relations related to infrastructure and is responsible for creating and maintaining the "SC WORKMATES", one of the contents of this website. He has recently become obsessed with all things Italian and describes himself, somewhat cryptically, as "a poor nose breather."

Industrial park development

Simply put, industrial park development involves providing "overall support for manufacturers pursuing stable factory development and operations." The park offers plots, introduce construction companies and provide power, industrial water and other infrastructure necessary for factory operation. The team also provides services to ensure the safety, security and comfort of tenant companies and their workers, such as conducting security measures within the park, maintaining communal roads, improving the communications environment, among others.

A number of Japanese manufacturers involved in various industries, such as automobiles, electronics and related parts, operate factories in Indonesia. Providing support for such manufacturers' overseas operations is one of the business activities undertaken by trading companies. For this issue, I visited Sumitomo's operating companies that support Japanese companies' overseas operations.

Industrial park attracting an ever-growing number of tenants

Cikarang is a city about an hour's drive on the freeway east of Jakarta. In the city proper, you will find a traditional Indonesian cityscape of streets lined with small stores. However, drive another ten minutes from the freeway exit and you will see a completely different view emerging through the window: a huge industrial site, comprised of the factories of a number of Japanese manufacturers all located in one vast area of land systematically divided into plots.

As many as 3 million new graduates become the working people every year in Indonesia. To take advantage of this abundant labor force and a huge consumer market born of a population of about 230 million people, Japanese manufacturers began entering the country in the 1990s. Sumitomo Corporation was quick to capture this trend and became the first private foreign company for Indonesia to launch an industrial park development project in Indonesia in 1990, naming it the "East Jakarta Industrial Park" (EJIP).

EJIP is situated in a good location, an hour-and-a-half by car from the airport and less than an hour's drive from the trading port. Sumitomo Corporation began construction in 1990, as its first industrial park development. With much trial and error, processes such as land readjustment, securing a stable power and water supply and establishing security measures were pushed through, with the result that all the plots were sold by 1997. EJIP also provides informal information services on local employment conditions and other issues. Customer service staff Ms. Nagai says, "With a single call, we respond to our clients' issues and concerns." In addition, meetings of tenant companies are regularly held to enable them to exchange information and submit requests. Such services are highly praised by the tenant companies.

Out of the current total of 96 tenants, comprising automotive parts and electronics and electric device manufacturers along with manufacturers of materials, food, and others, 77 are Japanese companies. EJIP's president, Mr. Omata, says, "The park has created direct local employment opportunities for about 45,000 to 50,000 people." Following on the heels of Sumitomo Corporation's development, other local and foreign companies have launched their own industrial park developments in quick succession, making Cikarang a huge industrial area.
