Sumitomo Corporation conducts internal environmental audits in all domestic departments every year in October and November to ensure that the environmental management system is functioning properly. In 2010 we carried out internal environmental audits in all 153 domestic departments and 339 departments of our group companies, with specific emphases on (1) proper selection of environmental aspects, (2) management of progress in plan implementation, and (3) evaluation of compliance with legal requirements. As a result of the audits, one category-A nonconformity and six category-B nonconformities were reported in group companies. These were swiftly corrected and the necessary preventive measures were promptly taken.
Sumitomo Corporation Group adopts a multiple-site system that allows management of many different offices and organizations under one environmental policy, which has been certified to conform to ISO 14001.
Third-party audits were conducted by an external, independent auditing organization, JQA (Japan Quality Assurance Organization), from May 16 to 20 in 2011, and renewal of ISO 14001 and an increased number of certified sites were duly confirmed on June 18, 2011.
