Contributions to Biodiversity Conservation

What is biodiversity?

The term “biodiversity” refers to the idea of a well-balanced state being maintained with respect to the abundance of Earth's species and ecosystems. Included in this is diversity in the genes handed down from past generations to the future. It is said that since the birth of Earth about 4 billion years ago all species have evolved differently by adapting to the environment surrounding them. The global environment—and this includes human beings—is supported by a diverse range of ecosystems formed by countless species interacting with each other within their natural environments. However, a number of wild species are in danger of extinction, mostly as a result of human activities such as development, overhunting, introduction of foreign species and so on. We humans have always made our own convenience and comfort our first priority. This self-centered behavior may have taken a heavy toll on a variety of species.

Consideration for nature and the environment as part of business activities

Based on its Environmental Policy, the Sumitomo Corporation Group is making genuine efforts to conserve the natural environment through its business activities. The Environmental Policy consists of a Basic Policy and Basic Guidelines. The Basic Policy states that “The Sumitomo Corporation Group, through sound business activities, will strive to achieve sustainable development aimed at symbiosis between social and economic progress and environmental preservation,” while the Basic Guidelines include, under “Caring for the natural environment,” a commitment to “protect the natural environment and preserve biodiversity.” As an integrated trading company, Sumitomo Corporation has long been dealing with a wide variety of products and services on an international scale. Those that are particularly closely connected with the natural world, such as mining and timber production, have the potential to inflict a strong negative impact on biodiversity and therefore careful consideration of the environment, including ecosystems, is required.
The Sumitomo Corporation Group therefore gives careful consideration to environmental conservation, taking the long view and making various efforts to contribute to the sustainable development of each country and local community in which it does business. In this the Group is guided by its Environmental Policy, mentioned above. At the same time as implementing projects aimed at securing a stable supply of precious natural resources, the Group is making devoted efforts to minimize impacts on ecosystems and the environment, to protect rare species, and so on.
