Contributions to Biodiversity Conservation

The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum complex and research organization and is made up of a number of museums, art museums, and even a zoo, mainly in Washington D.C., in the United States. With the aim of protecting migratory birds worldwide and conducting related research, the Institution founded the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center in the latter half of the 1990s, which in turn launched the Bird Friendly® certification program to help protect biodiversity and generate stable income for farmers. In 2004, Sumitomo Corporation, in support of this program, initiated imports and distribution of Bird Friendly® Coffee produced under this initiative.
