Sumitomo Corporation and Hitachi, Ltd. jointly win contract to supply steam turbine generators for the first super-critical thermal power plant in Egypt

Sumitomo Corporation (President & CEO: Susumu Kato; Head Office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo) and Hitachi, Ltd. (Chairman, President & CEO: Takashi Kawamura; Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) have jointly won a contract worth about 30 billion yen from East Delta Electricity Production Company, a utility company in Arab Republic of Egypt (Egypt), to supply two steam turbine generators for the first Egyptian super-critical thermal power plant to be built in the Gulf of Suez coastal area.

This turnkey contract includes manufacturing, installation and test run of two 650MW steam turbine generation units, scheduled for completion and delivery in summer of 2013. The tender took place in March 19, 2009, and after client's evaluation of the bid proposals from commercial and technical aspects, the contract was awarded to Sumitomo Corporation and Hitachi, Ltd., which received excellent overall evaluations. As to funding, Africa Development Bank (ADB) will finance the project.

The power generation facilities of this contract will be installed in a power plant to be newly built in the Ain Sokhna area situated 120 kilometers east-southeast of Cairo, to accommodate domestic power demand in Egypt, which keeps increasing every year as the economy steadily grows. In addition, the super-critical thermal power generation technology realizing higher generation efficiency and CO2 emission control under high pressure and high temperature steam conditions is to be adopted for the said power generation facilities for the first time in Egypt. The main fuel is natural gas, and the total power output of the entire power plant will be 1,300 MW.

Sumitomo Corporation and Hitachi, Ltd. have a record of receiving orders from Egyptian clients, including contracts for steam turbine generation units for combined thermal power plants in May 2002 and September 2005 as well as one for thermal power plant boiler facilities in September 2007. As power demand in Egypt is expected to grow at an annual rate of 6 to 7 % up to 2012 and more power generation plants are slated to be constructed in the future, Sumitomo Corporation and Hitachi, Ltd. will continue their active engagement in Egypt and its surrounding region.
