Sumitomo Corporation and Hitachi Ltd. received orders for boiler facilities for thermal power generation plant from Cairo Electricity Production Company of Egypt
Sumitomo Corporation (President and CEO: Susumu Kato) and Hitachi Ltd. (President and Representative Executive Officer: Kazuo Furukawa) have jointly received an order from Cairo Electricity Production Company (CEPC) of the Arab Republic of Egypt for boiler facilities for the thermal power generation plant. A signing ceremony was formally held on September 13, 2007. The lump sum orders for two 350,000-kW boilers and their auxiliary facilities, including installation, commissioning and test operation, total about 20 billion yen. The operation is scheduled to start in November 2010.
The boiler facilities ordered are for the Cairo West Thermal Power Station Unit No.7 and No.8, to be newly constructed. The site is located at about 20 km north-west of the Egyptian capital, Cairo. The facilities will be constructed in response to the rising domestic demand for electric power in Egypt and will be operated mainly with environmentally friendly natural gas. Babcock-Hitachi K. K. (President and CEO: Hitoshi Isa) is responsible for manufacturing the boiler facilities, and the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development, the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, and the OPEC Fund for International Development, are going to finance the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company, which is the holding company of CEPC.
Sumitomo and Hitachi have previously received orders jointly for facilities for electric power systems in Egypt, with this being the third order accepted, following the 250,000 kW steam turbines in May 2002 and September 2005. In addition to these orders, the two companies have also received orders individually: Hitachi has previously received orders for boiler facilities and gas turbines, while Sumitomo has received orders for substations and power transmission lines. Sumitomo and Hitachi's integrated experience through those projects was highly appreciated.
The demand for electric power in Egypt is expected to continue to rise, with many more power plants to be constructed. Sumitomo and Hitachi will actively promote the thermal power generation facility business in Egypt.
