Sumitomo Corporation signed first contract with Gascom, Russian satellite communication operator, for delivery of complete set of satellite communication systems.

Sumitomo Corporation (CEO: Mr. Motoyuki Oka, Legal address: Chuo-ku, Tokyo) (hereafter referred to as "Sumitomo") received an order of the complete set of equipment for the satellite communication systems (e.g. Transponder and Antenna system) from the company "Gascom" (General Manager: Mr. Dmitry N. Sevastianov, Legal address: Moscow region, Russia) which is the biggest non-state satellite operators in Russian Federation and belongs to world largest energy enterprise, "Gazprom", and signed a supply contract in July 2006, in Moscow, Russia.

This project being in the frame of the Federal Space Program for the period of 2006 to 2015 approved by the Russian government last year is to supply complete set of Antenna and Repeater System for two communication and broadcasting satellites called "Yamal-300" which Gascom plans to launch in 2008. The contract amount between "Gascom" and Sumitomo for the import portion is approximately 44Million US$ out of the total project amount, which will reach to nearly 170 Million US$ Sumitomo will also support the finance for local portion. Expected delivery time for the equipment is in the middle of 2008. Bank loan basically agreed in November, 2005 between JBIC (Japan Bank of International Corporation) and Gazprombank (credit period: 10.5 years), is now under final discussion for applying to this project first time.

Sumitomo as the General Supplier will organize the delivery of the most advanced electronic system from all the subcontractors of NEC TOSHIBA Space Systems (Japan), Tesat- Spacecom (Germany) and MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd (=MDA / Canada), as well as the whole project management and the arrangement of the finance. On the other hand, Russia is also in the leader in the satellite industry of the world. For instance, Energia (Russia), a shareholder of Gascom and as a General Contractor shall be responsible for producing the platform of the satellites, final assembling and launching them from Baykonur Cosmodrom in Kazakhstan by the Proton-rocket. Our goal of this project is to develop the most competitive communication satellite in the world by making use of advantageous fields from Russia and Japan.

Evaluating long-term experience (over 50 years) and big supply record (more than 1 Billion US$) of Sumitomo in Russian telecommunication market, such as the construction of 8,000 km Trans-Siberian digital telecommunication line, delivery and successful launch of Express satellite to the Russian Satellite Communication Company, Sumitomo was finally selected as a General Contractor.

Gascom, in the present operates three geostationary orbit satellites (Yamal-100/Yamal-200) and provides satellite communication service for Russian and European broadcasting / telecommunication companies. In order to meet increasing demand of satellite communication, Gascom is planning to additionally launch eight high orbit geostationary satellites including two communication satellites, "Yamal-300", four low orbit exploration satellites and three high orbit digital broadcasting (DARS) and mobile communication satellites, Sumitomo and Gascom at the same time signed the general cooperation agreement and confirmed that they would widely cooperate in this field.

Sumitomo is actively introducing Russian unique technologies to the world, in addition to the supply equipment to Russia. For example, Sumitomo has got agency poistion, in Japanese and Asian market from Kosmotras (Russia) who provides services of launching small-middle size satellites by the Ukrainian Dnepr-rocket after the division of intercontinental ballistic missile, and last year successfully launched two satellites (Optical Inter-orbit Communications Engineering Test Satellite "KIRARI", and Innovative technology Demonstration Experiment "REIMEI") of JAXA, Japan Aerospace Exploration In this way, Sumitomo is acvtively promoting various satellite business in Russia, CIS and other countries in the world.

Except for space industry, Sumitomo has participated in provisioning wireless broadband Internet service in 15 cities of Russia by using Wimax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) technology through the invested operator "Enforta B.V" and also entered into growing contents market by investing into the leading mobile content provider "SPN Digital Media",. Paying special attention to the high level of IT and telecommunication industry in Russia and CIS, Sumitomo is expanding its contribution to those industries from various aspects through the direct investment as well as the supply of high technologies.
