Sumitomo Corporation has been awarded "RobecoSAM Sustainability Award Bronze Class 2014" by RobecoSAM, a CSR research and rating company which analyzes candidate companies for inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices, major indices in the field of socially responsible investment (SRI), for the excellence in the Trading Companies & Distributors sector.
RobecoSAM evaluates the corporate social responsibility performance, and particularly outstanding companies in each industrial sector are awarded as gold, silver, and bronze classes. In 2014, 70 gold classes, 65 silver classes, and 87 bronze classes are awarded from 818 companies in 39 countries around the world.
In 2013, CDP (*) selected Sumitomo Corporation as the first integrated trading company to be included in its Climate Performance Leadership Index (CPLI), a list of companies at the forefront of climate change performance. The result was based on a survey conducted by CDP on behalf of institutional investors around the world concerning global warming initiatives taken by 500 leading companies in Japan ("Japan 500").
In the survey, companies responded to questions concerning their level of greenhouse gas emissions and climate change initiatives. Among companies included in the CPLI, Sumitomo Corporation earned the highest assessment, a rank of A, for its climate change strategies and emissions reduction activities. The high acclaim was in recognition of its strategic scheme for reducing environmental impact, its track record of CO2 emissions reduction, and its proactive engagement in environmental businesses including the renewable energy business, among others. In 2013, from among the Japan 500, twelve companies were selected for the CPLI, including Sumitomo Corporation.
CDP has adopted a streamlined approach to presenting scores in 2016. In this approach, Sumitomo Corporation was recognized as the top level "Leadership" resulting in a A-. By the new evaluation approach of CDP, the correspondence to the environmental issues of the company is evaluated at four levels of the "Disclosure" "Awareness" "Management" "Leadership" and the "Leadership" is the top level．

CDP is supported by 827 global institutional investors representing a total of 100 trillion dollars in assets. CDP holds primary environmental information on climate change, water, and forests, which are disclosed to help make strategic decisions on investments and policies.
Sumitomo Corporation is pleased to announce that it was ranked first place in the non-manufacturing sector trading company section at the 20th Nikkei Environmental Management Survey.
Reduction of environmental load through the global renewable energy power generation business as well as the overseas mining operation activities promoting biodiversity consideration, structure of promoting environmental management and continuous environmental management activities such as reduction of electricity and water consumption, and waste generation have been appreciated.
This survey assess achievement of improvement related to management efficiency and environmental measure such as reduction of greenhouse gases and waste, by performing a comprehensive analysis of corporate environmental management.
In the non-manufacturing category of this survey, each company's environmental management level was assessed by based on the total score of the following four criteria: "structure of promoting environmental management" "measures against global warming" "anti-pollution and biodiversity measures" and "resource recycling".
