Environmental Performance Data

The Sumitomo Corporation Group is working to conserve energy and reduce waste at its offices, while making contributions to the environment through its business activities.

Previous years' data for electricity consumption, CO2 emissions (at offices, logistics and general waste of Scope3), waste emissions, water consumption and paper consumption have been revised in line with actual management status by a review of the measuring criteria.

Boundary: Head office as well as regional offices, branches and sub-branches whose data can be collected in Japan.

Environmental Performance Data FY2016

Electricity Consumption

Sumitomo Corporation has set a target of reducing electricity consumption per square meter in exclusive area by an average of at least 1% annually. We will seek to reduce electricity consumption by 20% in FY2035 compared to FY2013 (the base year).

We reduced the electricity consumption by 2.8% in FY2016 compared to FY2015. In terms of the electricity consumption per square meter in exclusive area, we reduced it by 3.1% in FY2016 compared to the base year.

CO2 Emissions (at offices)

If Sumitomo Corporation achieves a target of its power consumption reduction, this achievement will effectively reduce the company's CO2 emissions by about 46% in FY2035 compared to FY2013 (the base year).

As for the breakdown of CO2 emissions for FY2016, Scope 1 emissions were 175 t-CO2 and Scope 2 emissions were 4,435t-CO2 in FY2016.

The above figures indicate total amount of CO2 emissions stemming from use of electricity, utility gas and district heat (cooling/heating water).

CO2 Emissions (from logistics)

CO2 emissions from logistics include the transport of cargo within Japan for which Sumitomo Corporation is the cargo owner, as stipulated in the Act on the Rational Use of Energy.

Sumitomo Corporation has set a target of reducing the use of energy per shipping weight due to domestic carriage by at least 1% annually.

Sumitomo Corporation has set a target of reducing general waste emissions per employee by an average of at least 1% annually from base year of FY2010. We reduced the general waste emissions by 5.2% In FY2016 compared to FY2015. In terms of the general waste emissions per employee, we reduced it by 25.5% in FY2016 compared to the base year.

Water Consumption

Sumitomo Corporation has set a target of reducing water consumption per employee by an average of at least 1% annually from base year of FY2010. We reduced the water consumption by 10.8% in FY2016 compared to FY2015. In terms of the water consumption per employee, we reduced it by 20.0% in FY2016 compared to the base year.

If Sumitomo Corporation achieves a target of its power consumption reduction, this achievement will effectively reduce the company’s CO2 emissions by about 46% in FY2035 compared to FY2013 (the base year) for its head office, regional offices, branches, and sub-branches in Japan.

For the breakdown of CO2 emissions for the head office, regional offices, branches and sub-branches in Japan, Scope 1 emissions were 175t-CO2 and Scope 2 emissions were 4,435t-CO2 in FY2016.

In FY2016, CO2 emissions at the head office, regional offices, branches and sub-branches in Japan were 66.24kg-CO2/m².

CO2 emissions at the head office were 4,462t-CO2 in FY2014, 4,378t-CO2 in FY2015 and 3,985t-CO2 in FY2016.

CO2 emissions at the head office, regional offices, branches and sub-branches in Japan were5,705t-CO2 in FY2012 and 5,626t-CO2 in FY2013.

In FY2016, CO2 emissions at the overseas offices were 56.31kg-CO2/m².

CO2 emissions at the overseas offices were 554t-CO2 in FY2012 and 534t-CO2 in FY2013.

CO2 emission factors (Overseas)

Emission factors from electricity generation are based on the country-specific data in 2013 listed on "CO2 EMISSIONS FROM FUEL COMBUSTION 2016 EDITION", an IEA (International Energy Agency) statistics.

CO2 emissions from logistics include the transport of cargo within Japan for which Sumitomo Corporation is the cargo owner, as stipulated in the Act on the Rational Use of Energy. Sumitomo Corporation has set a target of reducing the use of energy per shipping weight by at least 1% annually for its head office, regional offices, branches and sub-branches in Japan.

CO2 emissions from the incineration of general waste are calculated by using the CO2 emission factor specified under the Carbon Footprint Communication Program, assuming that all general waste stemming from Sumitomo Corporation’s operations are incinerated.

CO2 emissions due to overseas business trips are the emissions from flights departing from and arriving in Japan that Sumitomo Corporation employees took. Business trip destinations are classified into 12 areas and passenger-kilometers are estimated based on the travel distance between Japan and representative airport of each area. CO2 emissions due to overseas business trips are calculated by applying CO2 emission factors published by the UK's Defra to the passenger-kilometers.

CO2 emissions from commuting are those from the commuting of Sumitomo Corporation's employees, calculated by using the emissions factors per passenger-kilometer for passenger transport by transport mode published in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism publication "CO2 Emissions in the Transport Sector".

CO2 emissions from downstream leased assets are calculated based on the energy consumption of the buildings that Sumitomo Corporation owns and leases to tenants, in accordance with the Act on the Rational Use of Energy.

Sumitomo Corporation has set a target of reducing general waste emissions per employee by an average of at least 1% annually from base year of FY2010 for its head office, regional offices, branches, and sub-branches in Japan.

We reduced the general waste emissions by 5.2% In FY2016 compared to FY2015. In terms of the general waste emissions per employee, we reduced it by 25.5% in FY2016 compared to the base year.

In FY 2016, waste emissions at the head office regional offices, branches and sub-branches in Japan were 0.08t per employee.

Waste emissions at the head office were 276t in FY2014, 259t in FY2015 and 253t in FY2016.

Waste emissions at the head office, regional offices, branches and sub-branches in Japan were 458t in FY2012 and 423t in FY2013.

In FY2016, waste emissions at the overseas offices were 0.08t per employee.

Waste emissions at the overseas offices were 24t in FY2012 and 21t in FY2013.

In FY2016, water consumption at the overseas offices was 15.75m³ per employee.

Water consumption at the overseas offices was 3,627m³ in FY2012 and 3,626m³ in FY2013.
