Sumitomo Corporation Chairman Kazuo Ohmori met with Vietnam's Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and Myanmar's President U Thein Sein, both of whom had come to Japan to participate in the Seventh Mekong-Japan Summit Meeting.
In his talk with Vietnamese Prime Minister Dung, Mr. Ohmori mainly discussed efforts being made to improve social infrastructure in support of Vietnam's economic growth. In introducing Thang Long Industrial Park and Thang Long Industrial Park II now in development/operation as well as Thang Long Industrial Park III whose development was just recently approved, Mr. Ohmori noted that these industrial parks would help attract Japanese companies to Vietnam, and then went on to explain that Sumitomo Corporation would continue to contribute to Vietnam's social development through electric power projects to meet the expected increase in power demand and railway projects that take advantage of Japan's advanced technology. Prime Minister Dung expressed his hopes that Sumitomo Corporation would expand its business in Vietnam even further.
In his meeting with Myanmar's President U Thein Sein, Mr. Ohmori briefed the president on Sumitomo Corporation's various efforts to contribute to Myanmar's economic development, including development of the Thilawa Special Economic Zone and telecommunications projects. He noted that Sumitomo Corporation has an excellent record of performance in delivering railway cars and other equipment since the 1950s and is still active in such ventures in the railway sector, and that it had received orders for agricultural machinery in the context of yen loan projects. He also stressed that Sumitomo Corporation was committed to developing the human resources that would shoulder the country's future, as demonstrated in its scholarship programs for university students, its donations of school supplies to elementary school students, and its technical cooperation support such as training in railway maintenance operations. President U Thein Sein voiced high expectations of these wide-ranging efforts by Sumitomo Corporation.
Thang Long Industrial Park II helps companies to enter Vietnam by meeting their wide-ranging needs such as providing a stable supply of electricity and supporting operations.
