Utilization of Human Resources -Promoting Workplace Diversity-

Utilizing human resources with differing backgrounds by cultivating a culture that respects diversity

Sumitomo Corporation promotes respect for the diversity of human resources in its workplace culture so that diverse talent can capitalize on their different backgrounds to create new value and achievements in their respective fields, thus contributing to the sustainable growth of the Group.

Encouraging More Active Involvement of Female Employees in Business

Promoting active involvement of female employees in business is one of our important management strategies, and we are supporting these efforts through various measures. Aware of the support required for achieving a satisfying work-life balance, Sumitomo Corporation has introduced programs to encourage employees to work vibrantly and positively following maternity and childcare leave in addition to the systems of support that exceed requirements under the Child Care and Family Care Leave Law and related laws. For example, Sumitomo Corporation established the Triton Sukusuku Square in-house daycare center in 2008 to provide childcare services for Sumitomo Corporation Group employees, distributed a handbook that supports the achievement of balancing a professional career and childcare, and introduced a program that supports employees who only take their children with them while working overseas.

We made an action plan of promoting women in March 2016 prescribed by The Act on Promotion of Women's Participation and Advancement in the Workplace.

Sumitomo Corporation is certified as an "Eruboshi" company on the basis of the Act on Promotion of Women’s Participation and Advancement in the Workplace

In May 2016, Sumitomo Corporation was certified as a second-highest class "Eruboshi" company in recognition of the effort to promote the active involvement of female employees on the basis of the Act on Promotion of Women's Participation and Advancement in the Workplace.

Reforming and Diversifying Work Practices

Aiming to enhance productivity through efficient work practices, we have been reforming work practices since 2016. For example, we have set quantitative targets for paid leave taken, introduced a Premium Fridays system that encourages employees to leave work early on Fridays, and examined the introduction of teleworking. Further, we are working on maintaining and promoting health through our SCG Counseling Center established for promoting mental health care. As a result of these efforts, we received certification as a "White 500" enterprise with outstanding health and productivity management in February 2017.

Career Advisor System

Providing opportunities for young employees to develop their career as well as for senior employees to make the most of their experience

Sumitomo Corporation has a Career Advisor Program in place to provide opportunities for young employees to develop their career and for senior employees to make the most of their experience. In this program, senior employees with abundant experience in their respective careers are chosen and designated as career advisors (CAs) for each division to support employee career development.

These CAs have three major roles to play—they provide support to individuals (staff), give advice to management in their organization (their managers), and act as a communication bridge between individuals and the organization. The CAs thus support the career development of each employee and creation of a good work environment in which employees can exercise their capabilities and personalities to the maximum extent.
