Sumitomo Corporation regards OJT as the basis of its HR development. By combining OJT with OFF-JT, where employees review their OJT practices to generalize and conceptualize knowledge and skills gained from experiences during OJT, we provide employees with opportunities to develop a foundation from which they can advance to a higher and more challenging level of business performance. Through this combination of OJT and OFF-JT, we ensure that employees acquire basic skills and general knowledge required for the person in the trading and business investment company.
At Sumitomo Corporation, a job rotation program is in place to ensure that employees gain as much overseas experience as possible while they are young. In addition, we have expanded and reinforced our HR development scheme that enables employees to learn management and leadership skills at an earlier stage than before and join the managerial workforce quickly. With this program and scheme, we aim to link the strengths of each individual to our organizational success and growth.
This allows employees to experience working in a diverse range of environments, including cross cultural environments, at an early stage through job rotations; and to meet, work with, and receive input and opinions from many people in diverse locations at home and abroad. Through these experiences, employees are expected to become "people who accept diverse values but think for themselves and act on their own initiative" as well as people "who can create new businesses themselves without being constrained by existing frameworks."
Overseas training programs to develop the person with global mindset required in the trading and business investment company
At Sumitomo Corporation, the Human Resources Development Fund established in fiscal 2010 helps promote strategic and well-planned HR development at each business unit and division by financially supporting the overseas training of trainees (including those who engage in language or MBA/law studies) or participating in the overseas short-term executive training program.
The Global Internship Program, one of the programs supported by the fund, focuses mainly on internships in emerging markets, to which only a few trainees were sent in the past. This program offers practical business experience to trainees, with a view to develop talented individuals with a global mindset and the ability to use the local language.
Support OFF-JT of our strategic and well-planned human resources development
Sumisho Business College (SBC), a corporate university, facilitates strategic and well-planned human resources development in terms of OFF-JT (Off the Job Training). SBC offers about 300 programs per year that are designed to focus on three areas—"the Management Principles, Activity Guidelines and SC VALUES," "Leadership" and "Professional."
One of the most unique programs is the visit to the Besshi Copper Mine, the starting point of the Sumitomo Corporation Group. The main objective of this training is to give leaders of organizations of the Group an opportunity to experience and assimilate Sumitomo's Business Philosophy, the basis of the Group's Management Principles, and to ensure that the business philosophy is passed on to younger employees.
Through a variety of training programs provided by SBC, our employees can learn common basic business knowledge and skills required to work in the trading industry; advanced specific knowledge and skills necessary for investment, business management, business creation/innovation, etc.; and also develop their leadership.

Advancing Global Measures to Develop Human Resources
Aiming to recruit and develop personnel who can lead global business operations, the Sumitomo Corporation Group is focusing on promoting and developing locally hired employees in its overseas offices and Group companies.
As part of these efforts, we conduct training programs for locally hired employees at different career levels, such as managers, general managers, and senior executives. Through these training programs, nearly 300 participants each year come from all over the world to the Head Office in Tokyo. The programs establish a shared sense of the Sumitomo Corporation Group's corporate DNA and strengthen the sense of unity among employees as members of the Group by reaffirming participants' understanding of Sumitomo’s business philosophy and the Group's Management Principles. In addition, participants share information on the Group's management policies and strategies and improve their skills by attending various lectures.
In fiscal 2013, we reorganized our overseas offices into four broad regions. Under this system, we are promoting the development and utilization of local personnel by organizations in each region. Specific measures include the rotation of locally recruited personnel within each region and promoting personnel from overseas offices and Group companies to important positions. Furthermore, to promote global human resource development and utilization, the Head Office in Tokyo provides wide-ranging support to regional organizations in relation to such areas as recruitment and establishing training systems.
