A Drive to Maintain a Partnership into the Next Century Keeps Team Members Focused and Motivated
OAO Terneyles, a leading integrated forestry company based in Plastun, Russia, owns an area of forest about 1.4 times the size of Shikoku. Sumitomo Corporation has been in business with Terneyles as its partner since the company was founded 17 years ago. From the beginning, those involved in the partnership have been taking on immense challenges, including, for example, the establishment of Russia's largest timber processing facility and shifting the focus of projects from logs to processed timber.
At the same time, Sumitomo Corporation and Terneyles have worked together on preserving the natural environment by implementing a method of logging called ribbon cutting and acquiring FSC certification, a global standard for forestry accreditation. In order to develop the Russian timber industry, the project members have been working hard in a number of areas, pursuing a business that will last 100 years.
Using the ribbon cutting method, logging is done in strips so that seeds from surrounding trees will drop into the logged areas, allowing the forest to regenerate naturally and eliminating the need to plant trees.
