Developing and establishing infrastructure on vast stretches of undeveloped land, opening customs facilities, restaurants and clinics, and solving problems in cooperation with the firms who are our tenants—these are the kinds of contributions we make as part of our industrial park development activities.
Sumitomo began development of the Thang Long Industrial Park (TLIP) here in the Vietnamese city of Hanoi back in 1997. Now, the TLIP generates employment for 46,000 workers. Building on this success, Thang Long Industrial Park II is slated to be completed this year.
Among others, the TLIP has provided a home for a great number of Japanese firms doing business in Vietnam. To promote networking and a convivial atmosphere within the park, we organize seasonal events such as soccer tournaments and marathon relay races, which give participants a chance to form friendships and bonds that cut across the boundaries of country or employer.
Much of the success of the TLIP can be traced to the strong relationship we have long enjoyed with the country of Vietnam, where we have been engaging in wide range of businesses, including power generation and steel processing. In addition, we have provided support to 1,300 Vietnamese college students through our Sumitomo Corporation Scholarship program as well as hosting and funding educational programs for young people and supporting Japanese language education.
With a high proportion of its population age 20 or younger, Vietnam, which shares a border with China, is a dynamic and energetic country. Dexterous, hard-working, and self-disciplined, the Vietnamese display many qualities that we Japanese admire. Working with them and taking our time to make careful plans, we look forward to building a bright future for this country—together.
