A silver, zinc and lead mining project in San Cristobal, located in the Andes Mountains of the Republic of Bolivia. Sumitomo Corporation came in as a partner in 2006 with Apex Silver Mines Limited (U.S.) in the largest silver, zinc and lead mining project in the world. At the same time, Sumitomo and Apex formed a strategic partnership, acquiring priority negotiating rights for mineral exploration interests in which Apex is involved. The project will be the largest silver, zinc and lead mining project to be developed in the world within the next five years. Production began in late 2007, and the project is expected to be a stable provider of silver, zinc and lead resources as demand for these minerals grows worldwide.

The Life Sciences Division is engaged in the expansion and strengthening of the generic pharmaceuticals business in Japan through Medisa Shinyaku Inc., a subsidiary of Sawai Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. with equity participation by Sumitomo Corporation in 2006. Among the many generic pharmaceuticals, the Life Sciences Division is particularly focused on the development and sales of anticancer drugs. Presently, most of the anticancer drugs used in medical treatment facilities in Japan are new and extremely expensive. By providing cheaper generic anticancer drugs, the Life Sciences Division wants to contribute to holding down medical costs, reducing the economic burden on the patient.
The Life Sciences Division has established an agricultural chemical sales company Summit Agro (Moscow, Russian Federation) in Russia, participating in earnest in the rapidly growing Russian agricultural chemicals market. The company sells mainly agricultural chemicals from Japanese manufacturers (herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, etc.) and corn, sunflower, and rape seeds from European makers to farms and regional distributors within Russia.
