Earth and Soil-Friendly Organic Sugar

Updated January 2018

Delivering earth and soil-friendly sugar to Japan and the world

The Sumitomo Corporation Group imports organic sugar produced by Brazilian company Native Produtos Organicos .(*1) and provides it to the Japanese market. While sugarcane is also grown in Asian countries, we focus on imports from distant Latin America because we care about organic cultivation. Sugarcane can be processed very efficiently. After sugar is extracted, the sugar cane remains (bagasse) are burned in a boiler to create energy, and the residues removed in the sugar production process are brought back to the fields for use as fertilizer.

When thinking about environmental friendliness, Japanese people tend to focus largely on CO2 reduction. However, sugarcane cultivation and the production of sugar is also friendly to soil and the global environment because food residues are recycled in the process. This sustainable environmental activity provides reliable, safe food, and is organic in a broader sense. We are working hard to provide real organic foods as widely as possible, on a global level.

The Brazilian Native Produtos Organicos is the number one organic sugar supplier in the world. Out of about 180 million tons of sugar consumed in the world annually, 300 thousand tons are organic, out of which the company produces and sells 100 thousand tons.

Featuring vast farmlands stretching in their natural states

Currently, organic sugarcane is grown dominantly in Brazil and other countries in Latin America. Native Produtos Organicos is a top organic farming company in Brazil, owning a total of 22 thousand hectares of farmland within the country, that has obtained international certification for organic farming. Rich nature is preserved as is in their organic farmland, where many fish, birds, animals, insects, etc. live in lakes, islands, rivers, forests and meadows.

Organic sugar certified by organic JAS

Organic sugar sold in Japan must comply with organic JAS (Japanese Agricultural Standards for organic foods) at every production stage, starting from organic farming of sugarcanes and sugar production through packaging. We are making every possible effort in the trade of organic sugar, as an organic JAS-certified importer. Needless to say, the sugar produced by Native Produtos Orgânicos complies with JAS requirements. All of their sugar comes from pure organic sugarcane syrup, which is characterized by its natural sweet taste.

Pure taste approved by professionals

Our organic sugar has been used by a variety of food manufacturers who recognize the significance and taste of natural materials. They range from confectioners (including one in Tokyo that has used the ingredient over many years) to makers of jam, ketchup, seasoning soy sauce, and others. Furthermore, sales to general consumers started in 2007.

Currently, organic white and brown sugars are sold at Bio c' Bon, an organic supermarket that opened in Tokyo in December 2016. The sugars are sold by weight, allowing consumers to purchase whatever amount they need. We recommend visiting the store if you plan to be in the area.
